Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a physiologically-based therapy that help clients see disturbing material in a new, less distressing way.
EMDR therapy uses "bilateral stimulation" (e.g., right/left eye movement, or tactile stimulation, or sound), which activates the brain's opposite hemispheres and releases emotional experiences "trapped" in the nervous system. This assists the neurophysiologic system—the basis of the mind/body connection—to free itself of blockages and reconnect itself.
EMDR is utilized as a treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, depression, addiction, grief, phobias, and self-esteem issues. |
